Son having sex play with older friend?

I am a single father with an 8 year-old son. His best friend is almost 12 years old. They play together all the time as there are no other kids in my neighborhood. They have always got along fine and seem to have similar interests and hobbies. I recently found out through some accidental eavesdropping that his friend is showing him how to masturbate and they are possibly even having some sexual interaction with each other. There does not seem to be any forcing or coercion. I'm at a total loss with what to do. I want to believe that 8 is just too young to be doing this stuff. I was shown myself about masturbating by an older friend, but I was 11 at the time and my friend was just a couple years older. I don't want to give them unhealthy attitudes about sex, and I can't keep them apart as they are too good of friends. I imagine parents of multiple boys may have faced this problem before, but I only have one and haven't had to face this before. Does anybody have any advice?
I can't say I'm that concerned with abuse. They have a great relationship and my son just adores him. His friend is small for his age, and they are physically and emotionally about the same. I honestly think I'd be able to tell if there was any type of abuse involved.

Keep your son away from this child. Honestly, you would never forgive yourself if your son was abused, and 8 years is too young, you cant consent to sexual activities at 8.
I mean if it were an older man, I bet you would be calling the police. I would mention to the 12 year old parents too, its possible he was abused and thats how he knows about sexual activity with other males.
